Worlds -- -- -- Browningsville Connections
This material is offered to fellow genealogists in the hope that it will help locate additional information. If you have information which fits in this database but is not here, I would be most appreciative if you would send it to me for incorporation.
In a way, the challenge of genealogy resembles the challenge of assembling a jigsaw puzzle -- if in addition to seeing how the pieces fit, one also has to go out and find the pieces.
This collection of information by name and birthdate, primarily but not exclusively associated with Maryland prior to 1800 is an attempt to assemble as many pieces as possible, in the hopes that connections between them will be discovered.
This material is ordered differently than a typical genealogy. It is arranged to group people together who were living at the same time. By assigning "guessed" birth dates to various bits of information associated with a certain name, the likelihood of these bits of information coalescing around their original owner are increased. At the same time, because information is filled by guessed or real birthdate rather than relationship, pressure to prematurely associate information with specific persons is reduced.
This material is in transition. Ultimately it will be possible to track related lines backwards and forwards via dates, e.g. John Smith, b. 1755, of George [1730], had son Thomas b. 1780 gives sufficient information to find George at 1730 and Thomas at 1780. As entries are worked on, they are being revised to fit this format.
Dates
Dates providing month and day, barring errors in copying, are firm.
Dates in years only may vary by one year, usually being calculated from an age at some other time, such as census.
Dates marked ca. (circa) may vary by as much as five years, usually reflecting the period during which wills were made and proved. NLT (Not Later Than) or NET (Not Earlier Than) sets a boundary determined by some other event.
Dates marked G are guesses. These are assigned for marking the general period in which a person lived, using the following logic: "Everyone":
immigrates at age 25
becomes soldier in Revolutionary War at age 18
marries at age 25 (males) or 23 (females) in the 1600s
marries at age 21 (males) or 18 (females) in the 1700s
has children 1 year after marriage and at 2 year intervals thereafter
enters state militia at age 30
witnesses wills at age 40
dies at age 60.
Widows living alone are aged 50
Name Codes: Codes refer to some identifying characteristic of the earliest ancestor of a line.
Arrangement of Names: In order to assist the assembly of diverse references to what is potentially the same person, individuals are shown, in the presumed order of birth. Code numbers, however, link them to the earliest ancestor regardless of location.
Footnotes: Initial, complete references and long comments appear in Footnotes. To reduce the number of footnotes, shorter references appear in the text.
Computer Network Codes: Over time, most of the correspondance with descendants of this family has taken place via e-mail. For quick reference to them, their e-mail addresses appear in associated references. When it became apparent that some persons change email addresses with uncomfortable frequency, an effort was made to obtain mailing addresses as well, however, this did not take place in all cases.

D-NICHOLAS Nicholas Day. Nicholas Day originally came from Wales(2) and was born there perhaps in 1620, although 1630 is more likely. The next record of him occurs 22 February 1658, when "he with seven other men (all named) and two women, Elizabeth Gaibe and Catherine Roads," (Faulkner), having been bound out to Richard Owens, the latter "granted them their freedom and so notified his 'Lordships Grace,' the Crown of England that they were entitled to 50 acres of land.(3) Since the usual pattern at the time was for those who could not pay their own way to be 'transported' in exchange for seven years indentured labor, we may infer from this that Nicholas Day was so transported: that his assets in Wales were not great enough to cover the cost of transportation; and that his actual voyage took place about wseven years prior to obtaining h is freedom, or about 1651. If he was in fact born in 1620, he would have been 31 art the time of the trip. A 1630 birthdate would have made him 21, which appears more reasonable. His oldest child, Nicholas Day, Jr, was born about 1685, when Nicholas Day, Sr was 55 or 65, depending on his birthdate. When next heard from it is June 6, 1693. He is listed as Nicholas Day, Sr of Anne Arundel Co., Md, and for 1200 pounds of tobacco he obtains 200 acres of land at Gun Powder Falls on Gun PowderRiver Northeast of Baltimore. Also that year, for 3000 pounds of tobacco, Thomas Bruins sells him 150 acres of land named Lesser Chance, and on November 5, 1693, Nicholas Day bought a part of the tract known as William the Conqueror. From this, several additional inferences can be made. There are no records showing whether Nicholas Day owned land in Ann Arundel County during the 36 years between 1658 and 1693; but he apparently lived there and became prosperous enough to be able to make the purchase outlays for the land in Baltimore County. If he was born in 1620, he would now be 73, rather old for a new venture, with his oldest child not older than 10, and probably several younger children on the scene as well. A 1630 birthdate would make him 63 at this time--which appears more reasonable. "He was taxed for land on the north side of the Gunpowder from 1699--1706.(4) His will, dated December 1, 1704 and proved February 2, 1705, is on file in the Hall of Records(5) and the following is a transcription made from a photostat of it.:(6)

Nicholas Day, Sr's wife was named Sarah, and she died about 1736. Her youngest child, Diana, married in 1718. Diana would not likely have married much younger than age 18, which would place Diana's birth at 1700. It is not likely that Sarah was older than 45 at that time, and thus Sarah's birth would not have been earlier than 1655. Even with a 1630 birthdate for Nicholas, he would have been 25 years older than she. Sarah would still have been up to 81 years old at her death. "Sarah Day's will, dated October 20, 1730 and proved in 1736 is on file in the Hall of Records (Balt Co Wills, Box 5, Folder 87). Barbara Turner (WCRG44A) has Sarah's surname as Cox, m 1658. If she was 18 at marriage she was b. 1640 and died at age 90 to 96, and had her children 26 years after marriage, or age 44 to 59. Possibly marriage date was 1685. The following is a transcription made fom a photostat of the original will (92= (7))

DENG-2-3 Edward Day, b. G1644, possibly brother of Elizabeth, above. An Edward Day transported to Md in 1671 (Skordas 16:439), given land jointly with Mary Day, probably wife, transported at same time. An Edward Day witnessed a will in Talbot County in 1686. (Baldwin II:39) Different wife indicates this Edward probably not same as DES-2. Existence of an Edward witnessing a will in Talbot leads to assignment of Edward and Mary to this sounty. Assignment to this county leads to guess about being Elizabeth's brother. No indication of children.

This estate, which commands a magnificent view down St. Leonard's Creek, had originally been the seat of Captain Henry Morgan of the Puritan Militia. The old house has been renovated and is now one of the most notable relics of the late seventeenth century in Maryland. Architectural historians attirubte its building to 1670-1680. It was probably built by Robert Day, who lived until 1697...There is a tradition that the Days are descended from William Eltonhead, Lord of Eltonhead Manor, through a marriage early in the Colonial era." (Faulkner, 10; St. John's Parish Register, 17-R) Assuming he was at least 18 at his marriage, Edward Day was born not later than 1704. If he was an adult(28) at the time of his father's will in 1704,(29) he was born not later than 1686, and was 36 years old at his marriage. In any event, he was younger than Nicholas and could not have been born earlier than 1675, since his mother Sarah was not likely to be younger than about 20 at the time of his birth. Assuming his birth took place before 1693, he was born in Anne Arundel County. Edward and Avarilla lived at Taylor's Mount. (Marys, SJPR 3-R) He witnessed wills in 1726 (Baldwin VI:11), 1732 (Baldwin VI:233), 1738 Baldwin VIII:48), and 1740 (Baldwin VIII:36) His own will was proved February 12, 1746 (BCW 25:4), and names 6 of his 9 children. John Day was executor and accounts were administered 15 June 1748. (Md Admin Accts 25:13). An Avarilla died in 1734.(30) This could not have been the mother, who was having children until 1744--unless Edward remarried, of which there is no record. Since two children are named Avarilla, it is most likely the earlier died in 1734, passing the name to the next daughter, born in 1735. An Avarilla married Patrick Lynch on February 24, 1746, 12 days after Edward's will was proved. The first daughter by this name was deceased at this time, and the second was just 11 years old, leaving the conclusion it was the widow Avarilla who remarried at this time. On June 15, 1748, the Administration Account was filed (Md Admin Accts 25:13) with John Day as executor and indicating that widow Avarilla had married Patrick Lynch. Children of Edward and Avarilla:

will as wife of Obadiah Picchet at that time--1704. (BCW 3:47-8) She subsequently married John Greer and
is so listed in her mother's will.(BCW Box 5, folder 87) Her youngest child was born about 1728. Assuming
that she was not over 45 at the time her youngest child was born, Sarah Day was born not earlier than 1683.
Assuming that she was at least 18 by the time she is first mentioned as married in 1704, she was born not later
than 1686. According to her father's will(39) her two sisters were younger than she. John Greer, her husband,
testified in 1738 that he was fifty years old at the time, placing his birth about 1688. (Maryland History
Magazine 18:21) He was the son of James Greer and Ann Taylor.(40) While the sons received land from their
father, Sarah was willed "all that parte of my stock of hoggs that is of her proper markes." Her husband
Obediah Prichett was also given "six young sows with pig." (41) From her mother Sarah received an equal
share of her goods and chattels.(42) John Greer was active in buying land from 1718 to 1720. Greer's
Discovery, 92 acres, rent 0-3-3 1/2, surveyed to John Greer, Jan 23, 1720, lying on the north side of Main
Falls of Gunpowder River." (Certificate EI3:443) was patented to Thomas Greer (BCLO BI:410). John
Greer was selling land from 1747 to 1748. After the April 4, 1748 sale, no further records concerning John
Greer have been found in Maryland.(43) John Greer left a nuncupative will in Augusta Co, Virginia in 1750.
"Mr. Torrence of Md, an early researcher of Md. Greers, thought it most probable that this John was the
same of Md. record who married Sarah Day."(44) "One source says John Greer died in Baltimore County about

. She, if no younger than 18 at marriage, would have been born not
later than 1695. Listed as one of the two younger daughters in her father's will,(61) she would not have been
born earlier than a year after Sarah's earliest birth, or 1684. No children have been discovered for Elizabeth
Day McComas. She is not listed in her mother's will in 1730, (BCW Box 5, folder 87) and presumably was
deceased by that time. McComas married Hannah Whittacre, Aug 23 1728. D-NICHOLAS-5 Diana Day, (b betw 1684 & 1700, of Nicholas [c1620], d. later than 1727). "Diana
Day...married Joshua Merriken on Jun 24, 1718 in Baltimore County, Maryland. (St John's Parish Register)
Joshua Merriken, the son of Capt. Hugh and Ann (Bond) Merriken, was born about 1688 in Broad Neck
Hundred. When he was aged ten, his father died and he went to England and returned as the ward of his
uncle Joshua.(62) He removed to upper Baltimore County, where in 1719 he was clerk of the parish of St.
John's.(63)" Assuming Diana was at least 18 at marriage, she was born not later than 1700. She would not have
been born earlier than Sarah, her older sister, so was born not earlier than 1684. According to Newman
Joshua Merriken died November 8, 1723 intestate, but his will is listed as written November 6, 1726 and was
proved March 8, 1726 (1727?)(64)
As abstracted in Baldwin, it provided for his wife Dianna, executrix, to have
half of the land during her lifetime; should her unborn child be a son, he should be named Joshua and possess
the aforesaid tract at Diana's decease; she would have half of his personal estate during her widowhood; and
should she marry, she would receive a child's portion. To his son Hugh and his heirs would go half the
aforesaid land. Should either of the aforesaid sons die without issue, the survivor would inherit the portion
of the deceased, neither son having the power to sell or mortgage their portions. To both sons the aforesaid
"George's". "To his daughter Ann and her heirs the outward part of Merrikeen's Inheritance. To daughter
Mary and her heirs 200 acres of Merrikeen's Outlet at the head of Bush River. To the unborn child (if a girl,
to be named Diana) and its heirs Merrikeen's Branches near the land of John Weasly. Testators were Edward
Day, Samuel Baker, William Bradford and Alexander Maccomus. His widow filed a return of inventory:
old books, two white servants and one black. "Diana (Day) Merriken then married (2) Benjamin Jones on
January 5, 1737.(65) His will was written April 22, 1739 and was proved May 22, 1739.(66) As abstracted in
Baldwin, he was a "Planter of St. John's Parish, Baltimore County." His entire estate went to his wife, Diana,
the executrix, who was to make over to William Bradford two tracts of land called Turkey Hill and
Strawberry Hill. Testators swere William Cooke, Mary Merriken, Thomas Preston, Josseph Allein, and John
Cameron. Children of Joshua and Diana (Day) Merriken: 1. Mary, b. April 24, 1719 or 1720 (mother married in 1718 and brother born in 1721). Testator to

(All Hallows Parish Regist, p. 46/115) D-NICHOLAS-1 Nicholas Day, Jr b c. 1685 of Nicholas [c1620], married Elizabeth Cox, daughter of
Christopher and Mary Cox, on July 14, 1709, as recorded in the Register of St. John's Parish in Baltimore
County. (SJPR:17R; AAI:4) Assuming that Nicholas Day was not younger than 21 at the time of his
marriage, he would not have been born later than 1688. At that time his parents were presumably still in
Anne Arundel County, which would be the county of his birth. According to his father's will, he was the elder
son. "One of the first to settle (or take up lots) in Joppa, new county seat of Baltimore County was Nicholas
Day, Jr. The town was laid out April 20, 1725."(70) "Joppa, along with 41 other towns, was created in 1707
by a special act of the General Assembly, and it was established as the county seat by another act in 1712.
And finally, in 1724, the General Assembly passed an act for laying out a town at Joppa. The town
commissioners laid out 21 acres of 40 half-acre lots and one acre, God's Acre, was set aside for St. John's
parish church. On this acre was built a brick church completed before 1730. "Although Joppa had difficulty
in becoming established, it grew rapidly into a booming seaport with an excellent harbor. The Gunpowder
River was a source of power for its grist and iron mills. A number of substantial houses and buildings were
constructed of brick, and there was even a shipbuilding industry at Joppa. "Its chief source of revenue was
from the export of tobacco which came "rolling down the roads" from the upper sections of the country.
Farmers would pack their tobacco in huge hogsheads, fasten pins to these, attach shafts to the pins, and have
horses pull and roll them to the warehouses at Joppa. The area had many fine "rolling roads: as a result of
this."(71) St. John's parish itself was created in 1692, and thus Joppa was its second location when the church
was completed around 1730. In a history of the parish, a number of Day descendants are mentioned.(72) After
Joppa declined a generation or more later, a new church for St. John's parish was built in Kingsville.
Kingsville was the location where Nicholas Day, Jr, had settled, although it acquired that name only in 1815.
On the tract William the Conqueror, originally bought by Nicholas Day, Sr, Nicholas, Jr in 1710 began
building "the first section of the 16 room mansion now known as the Kingsville Inn....(73) "The oldest part of
the Inn, which included what is now the large dining room at the north end of the building, was built by
Nicholas Day, Jr. This room was at least two rooms originally. A fireplace in the south end was sealed off
when it was converted to one room. The floor is about 10 inches above the original floor. The large
fireplace was the center of activities and supplied all of the heat and cooking facilities. On the left of the
fireplace is some evidence of an old oven. This room has been kept as plain as possible to resemble its
original kitchenlike appearance. Nicholas Day, Jr, lived on the property until his death in 1740 [sic], and his
widow lived there until 1742.(74) Nicholas Day, Jr is mentioned as witness to a will in 1731(75). His own will
was dated 31 March 1738 (Baldwin VIII:36) with notary record May 25, 1739 (Faulkner). It is on file in the
Hall of Records(76) and the following is a transcription made from a photostat of it: I Nicholas Day of the Town of Joppa in Baltimore County and Province of Maryland being Sick &

believes Elliott was still in Maryland at this time. Fairfax Co. is about 40 miles S.W. of Monkton and 2,000
pounds would be 1 hogshead I believe. "He must have sold it in Virginia to avoid the higher taxes in
Maryland." Note that Sarah of Nicholas, Jr, has on occasion been confused with Sarah of Edward [1675],

thriving years, Joppa began to die. Timber had been stripped from the banks of the Gunpowder River, and
as the years passed tons of earth were washed from the tobacco farms to the river's mouth. The harbor
became clogged with thick layers of mud. Malaria and a small pox epidemic hastened the town's end when
its citizens moved inland to escape these diseases. The worst blow, however, was in 1768 when the county
seat was moved from Joppa to Baltimore. By 1814 nothing was left of Joppa except the deteriorating St.
John's Church and four dwellings." In 1811 Edward Day built a stone church at Kingsville for the use of St.
John's Parish, which he deeded to the parish in 1817. This is known as the "Old Church". The "New
Church" was built of Fort Deposit granite. Kingsville is named for Abraham King, who, in 1815, acquired
about 190 acres of the original grants, Leafe's Chance and William the Conqueror.(143) Edward Day's
tombstone at St. John's, Kingsville, lists him as "a donor to the vestry of this church."(144) *1760 D-JAMES-1. Mary Day, b. Maryland Dec 18, 1760, of John [1720] (JDFB). Age 16 in 1776. (Brumbaugh,
