JACK DAY'S WORLDS
Jack Day's
Worlds
All of us live in many worlds--the world of work, the world of family, the world of community. The nature of things is that these worlds stay fairly separate. When we meet someone from work while shopping, there's sometimes a moment's confusion--the person is out of place, he or she has stepped out of the world where we expect them. Only a few of our better friends know us in more than one of our worlds. This page invites you into step into Jack Day's different worlds:
Directory of Jack Day's Worlds
Professional
- I am ordained clergy of the United Methodist Church, a clergy member of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, and, since July 1, 2003, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, Upperco, Maryland. For five generations, members of my Day family have been ordained ministers. Sermons since my appointment to Grace are shown at the Grace site. Sermons and other public presentations presented elsewhere are displayed at the Doing Justice, Loving Mercy: Sermons and Services site. In 2000 a sermon won a prize from the John Templeton Foundation. From October 2000 to March 2001 I served as interim co-pastor at St. James United Methodist Church, in West Friendship, Maryland. Before my appointment to Grace, I spent almost 30 years as an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, Columbia, Maryland.
- Until July 2003, I served at the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society as Program Director, Health and Wholeness, in the Ministry of Public Witness and Advocacy. My specific work focuses, in response to resolutions passed by the United Methodist General Conference, were health care legislation, notably universal health care, as well as congregational observance of Health Care Sabbaths, and mental illness, especially promoting development of a mental illness network of "Caring Communities" in United Methodist congregations. I still provide GBCS some consultation in these areas.
- I am a founding member, webmaster, and second vice president of the International Conference of War Veteran Ministers , founded ini 1989 as the National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers. This site has further links to Vietnam veteran and spiritual healing sites. From 1999 to 2003 I served as Executive Director of this organization. As part of ICWVM/NCVNVM I have worked with the Sidran Institute in Towson, Maryland to develop a curriculum for clergy and congregations as part of the Pastoral Care for Trauma Survivors Project. We are hoping this curriculum will be published in 2005.
Personal
- Browningsville Connections (Genealogy) Information and links to Day, Walker, Beall, Purdum, King, Boyer, Lewis and other families of upper Montgomery County, Maryland. Once I thought perhaps Kittimaquund, Tapac of the Piscataways, was an ancestor; now he appears to be an ancestor's uncle!

Schools:
From Inner Mongolia to Chapel Hill I grew up in a missionary family. Kindergarten was in Peking; most recent graduate school was in North Carolina. In between was Woodstock, a boarding school in the Himalaya mountains. I had a Chinese name -- Dai Wan Kwang -- almost as soon as I could pronounce my American name.
- Vietnam Chaplain: Central Highlands Diary Going back to Asia wearing a uniform made for a very different world. Fortunately, I took a camera. Thirty-five years later, in June 2004, I returned to Vietnam. Eight pages of photos start here.
- Deserts and Oases: A Veteran's Poetry Many of these poems are verbal snapshots; one of them won me an airplane ticket to Canton, NY.
- The World of Travel. We love to travel. Some of the photos can now find their way to the web.
