Tranquility

By Jackson H. Day, Plei Djereng, 22 November, 1968

"That village we're flying over--
Women in the square are winnowing rice:
their men must be somewhere, asleep perhaps,
in the bunkers, back from patrol.

And look at those children, so carefree,
playing hide and seek in the zigzag trenches
over by the machine gun.

Outside the concertina wire--cattle
in the fields of fire, grazing
or sleeping in the sun, so quiet and
peaceful.

Do you see?"
